What is a Carbon Credit Originator?

Carbon Credit Originators is the term given to businesses that sell carbon credits which have been sourced from approved projects. These projects pro-actively prevent carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere, or even remove them from the atmosphere altogether.

Within Australia, originators use 2 types of projects to create the carbon credits (offsets):

1. Renewable Energy Projects

This type mainly comprises wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and hydro power projects. The rationale behind including these types of 'clean energy' projects in the carbon trading scheme is that the energy they generate displaces the emissions that a 'dirty' energy production method (such as a coal-fired power station) would've otherwise released. Some of the income generated by these schemes is reinvested into new 'green' energy projects, which over time will reduce our use of dirty energy production methods and so progressively lessen the impact of industry on the environment. 1 Renewable Energy Certificate - or 'REC' - represents 1 tonne of CO2.

(Note: All RECs offered to us for trade must be Government Accredited)

2. Bio-Sequestration Projects

These types of projects work very differently from the above. In fact, they're almost the complete opposite, in that instead of preventing carbon being released into the atmosphere, they actually absorb (or 'sequester') it from the air. Currently, the vast majority of bio-sequestration projects use trees (forestry), which naturally carry out carbon sequestration through the process of photosynthesis. Less common types of bio-sequestration projects include ocean fertilization and ocean nourishment, both of which aim to encourage the growth of plankton, which is an incredibly efficient carbon sink. Other less project-based methods of bio-sequestration are the development of innovative agricultural practices, which harness the capacity of soil to absorb carbon. These less common types of bio-sequestration are in their infancy compared to forestry, but we look forward to the opportunity of working with originators in these areas as the techniques are developed further.

Our customers are ready to buy

Prior to going to the market on behalf of our customers, we ensure they've conducted rigorous independent assessments to help them determine exactly what type of and how many carbon credits they need to buy. Only once we know their specific requirements do we draw on the details of the originators registered in our database to find a perfect fit.

So, who are our customers?

Although we act on behalf of overseas companies as well as domestic buyers, the vast majority of our customers are from the voluntary market within Australia. The number of companies purchasing carbon credits in Australia is growing rapidly, as industry prepares itself for the staggered rollout of the mandatory CPRS scheme in 2011. The voluntary carbon credits market comprises some of the most innovative, forward-thinking and successful companies operating in Australia. They are businesses who recognise their environmental obligations and who understand the myriad benefits of pursuing a voluntary carbon offset strategy ahead of the commencement of the mandatory scheme. Many of them have their own internal carbon reduction targets, which often exceed the requirements proposed in the current draft legislation. Suffice to say, our customers are committed to minimising the impact of their activities on the environment. They don't need convincing.
